Apple says supply constraints for Mac mini and Mac Studio to persist for several months

During its quarterly earnings call today, Apple CEO Tim Cook addressed the ongoing supply shortages affecting the company's pro desktop Macs. Many configurations of the Mac mini and Mac Studio are currently out of stock at Apple's online stores.

Cook explained that customer interest in agentic AI use cases, such as OpenClaw, is driving demand for the Mac mini and Mac Studio beyond what Apple had predicted. Due to industry constraints on advanced nodes and memory components, the company expects these supply shortages to continue for the next several months.

The situation is not limited to desktops. Apple also forecasted ongoing supply constraints for the MacBook Neo, its low-cost laptop. Cook described demand for the MacBook Neo as “off the charts,” noting that it helped Apple set a record for acquiring new Mac users.

Regarding the Mac mini and Mac Studio, Cook stated: “on the Mac mini and the Mac Studio, both of these are amazing platforms for AI and agentic tools, and the customer recognition of that is happening faster than what we had predicted, and so we saw higher than expected demand.”

Cook specifically identified the availability of advanced nodes, on which Apple Silicon chips are produced, as the primary constraint. He acknowledged that the company had underestimated how much it should manufacture and that significant lead times are required to meet higher demand levels. As a result, it will take several months to achieve supply-demand balance for these machines.

Additionally, Apple expects component memory pricing to continue rising over the foreseeable future. Cook mentioned that the company is exploring “several options” to mitigate that impact, though no specific measures were detailed.

The shortages highlight the growing importance of Apple's desktop lineup for AI workloads. The company’s custom chips, with their unified memory architecture, are particularly well-suited for running large language models and other AI applications locally. This trend appears to have caught Apple off guard, leading to the current supply constraints.

Analysts note that the semiconductor industry is still grappling with capacity limitations for advanced manufacturing nodes, which could affect not only Apple but also other hardware manufacturers. However, Apple’s high demand for cutting-edge chips may give it leverage in securing future production capacity.

In the meantime, customers seeking Mac mini or Mac Studio configurations may face extended delivery times. Apple has not provided specific estimates for when stock will improve, but Cook's comments suggest that the situation will remain challenging for at least two to three quarters.

The news comes as Apple continues to expand its presence in the AI market. The company has been investing heavily in on-device intelligence, and products like the Mac Studio are positioned as powerful tools for developers and researchers. With demand outstripping supply, Apple may need to reallocate resources to meet the surge.
